Considerations for Undivided Living in 2011
“Living divided no more” is Parker Palmer‘s chant in his heartening and eloquent book, A Hidden Wholeness. Scholars in Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology have written in depth about the condition of isolation and disconnection faced by citizens of the twenty first century. In particular, a sense of dividedness, particularly with regards to one’s work and personal life, seems widespread. Forty hours a week strictly for work. Please take care of other “personal” duties during the week’s remaining waking hours.
For those who yearn for more integrated living or wholeness, Palmer, an Author, Educator and Activist, offers thoughtful and provocative prompts. Below are Palmer’s humble suggestions as to what a divided life looks like. Do they look familiar? Cheers to developing a less divided life in 2011!
- We refuse to invest ourselves in our work, diminishing its quality and distancing ourselves from those it is meant to serve
- We make our living at jobs that violate our basic values, even when survival does not absolutely demand it
- We remain in settings and or relationships that steadily kill off our spirits
- We harbor secrets to achieve personal gain at the expense of others
- We hide our beliefs from those who disagree with us to avoid conflict, challenge and change
- We conceal our true identities for fear of being criticized, shunned or attacked
